Dow Chemical in need of federal baby sitter

Stakeholder Comment on Preliminary National Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Priorities for Fiscal Years 2011-2013
Docket ID: EPA-HQ-OECA-2009-0986 Agency: EPA

Tittabawasee River Watch (TRW) submitted Dow Chemical’s dioxin contamination in Mid Michigan to the EPA in response to the agency’s request for sites to be added to the 2011 EPA National Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Priorities list. The TRW letter can be found here. The site with more submissions is here.

In their letter to EPA, TRW stated that indeed no agency has better documented, then EPA, the recalcitrance of Dow Chemical for their failure to take responsibility for their contamination. If any site/company is in need of ENFORCEMENT monitoring it would be Dow Chemical. River residents are the stakeholders confronted daily and who are impacted most by Dow’s contamination. Residents have never been on the receiving end of the deference rendered to Dow Chemical all these past 8 years. TRW submitted documentation supporting their claim. A EPA authored history of Dow Chemical obstruction in dealing with the Michigan DEQ can be read here which to date EPA has chosen not to post.
