Chicago Tribune did a great job capturing the long history of mid- Michigan’s dioxin contamination and local sentiment on Dow Chemical’s tarnishing the image of the Great Lakes Bay Region (aka Saginaw Valley). However, the dismissive and myopic comment from the Chamber of Commerce speaks volumes as to why this issue has not been resolved.
“Just because you are standing on this stuff, you aren’t going to glow or get sick,” said Bob Van Deveter, president of the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce.
But people don’t just stand on dioxin-contaminated soil. Families and children, play, garden, recreate, fish, boat, live and breathe on these contaminated floodplains and rivers.
